Overview

Located in Bloomfield on the North Atlantic island of Newfounland, Outport Acres is a family-run farm delivering fresh organic food to the people of the island. Small parcels, well managed, can feed entire communities. A former oil-industry technologist turned regenerative grower, Adam Furlong left a decade-long career in the offshore oil and gas sector to pursue his dream of farming. In 2020 he and his family put down roots in Bloomfield on the Bonavista Peninsula and founded Outport Acres, a micro-farm known for microgreens, cut flowers, and a year-round vegetable production supplying Eastern/Central Newfoundland. A vocal advocate for healthy soils and food sovereignty, Adam often challenges the use of synthetic farm inputs such as glyphosate and speaks out on the red-tape barriers faced by new farmers—issues he knows first-hand after a multi-year struggle to secure a mere 1.1 acres of adjoining Crown land to expand his farm. He has shared that story on the Taking Action podcast, highlighting how land-access policy can stifle local food production. Today, Adam channels his skill set—logistics, safety, and systems thinking—into building a resilient, food hub for Newfoundland. Whether by hosting on-farm workshops and an unwavering belief that the future of food is local, regenerative, and in the hands of everyday people.
